2012 International Bridge Building Contest!

On May 5, 2012, at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, 51 high school students from around the U.S. and the world gathered for the 35th Annual International Student Model Bridge Building Contest.

Using materials from an official kit, students design and construct a small wooden bridge according to specifications. During the contest, each bridge is weighed, tested to failure, and scored by its efficiency, which is the carried load divided by the bridge's weight. Trophies were awarded to the six students who designed, built and tested the model bridges with the highest efficiencies.

This year's winner was Jacob Cantrell from Wenatchee High School in Washington.
His bridge - which weighed only 10.47 grams (about .37 ounces) - carried more than
45,540 grams (approximately 100 pounds!).
