"Historians have come to realize, somewhat belatedly, that one of the
unique characteristics of the American West is the multitude of diverse
ethnic groups who immigrated from around the globe and converged in a
relatively short span of time to create a new society that we are
still trying to come to terms with."
In 1986, Dames and
Moore under contract
to the U. S. Bureau
of Reclamation
undertook a study
of historic central
construction camps.
Part of the research design for
this study was to examine the
average workers of these camps.
This "Historical Archaeology
From the Bottom Up" approach
investigated many aspects of early
20th Century western social history.
Thirty-five archaeological sites were examined during the study including work and home
locales of the Roosevelt Construction Community.

Studying the past, even our own recent past, helps us to understand
how we got to where we are today.
