CORPS OF ENGINEERS - MAIN-STEM RESERVOIRS

Heavy rains in early May pushed the Missouri River to levels not seen since the start of the drought in 2000. The heavy rain, especially in South Dakota, pushed runoff above Sioux City, Iowa in May to 123 percent of normal. The revised 2007 forecast is 20.8 million acre-feet (MAF), 83 percent of normal. Normal runoff is 25.2 MAF. Reservoir storage on June 1 was 38.3 MAF, 1.8 MAF higher than last month.

System storage at the end of May was 38.4 MAF, 1.7 MAF lower than last month.

The six main-stem powerplants generated a record low 285 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity in May, only 35 percent of normal. This level of generation was attributed to the lower pool levels and the decrease in releases from the dams. Total energy production for 2007 is forecasted to be 5.2 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) compared to a normal of 10 billion kWh.
