Narration
Geology Palmetto Bend Dam is built on Texas Coastal Plain within the Coastal Prairie Belt physiographic division. The Coastal Plain is underlain by sedimentary formations of Cenozoic and Mesozoic Age which have and estimated total thicknesss of at least 20,000 to 30,000 feet. Regional dip is southeastward at slight angle into the Gulf Coast Geosyncline. The Coastal Prairie Belt, the gulfward belt of the Coastal Plain, is a depositional land surface built up in relatively late geologic time by coalescing deltas of widely meandering, sediment-laden streams. This surface has been little modified by erosion. At Palmetto Bend Dam the relatively shallow valley of the Navidad River is surrounded by nearly flat praires which slope very gently toward the Gulf of Mexico. Deeply buried normal faults (generally parallel and downthrown to the coast) have been indicated by deep drilling in the general area but none are known to cutt the surface at the dam. The dam os located in an area considered to be the lowest seismic rick in the United States.
