Geology The Vermejo Project is located in northeastern New Mexico in the Canadian River Valley. The area consists of plains and rolling hills. Bedrock in the area consists of shales with interbedded sandstone that make up a part of the Pierre shale. Loess, alluvium, and colluvium overlie the bedrock. The project area is at the southern end of the Raton Basin that lies along the eastern front of the Sangre de Cristo Range. Bedding of the shale and sandstone dips gently northwestward into the basin. There are no known faults in the immediate area; however, a series of north trending thrust faults has been mapped 30 miles west of the project. Dam No. 13 is located about halfway between the Canadian River and the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Range, on a plain that rises in a series of steps formed by alternating units of shale and sandstone of the Pierre shale. The bed dips gently toward the northwest so that the outcrop of the sandstone units to form low ridges. The interbedded shale units are eroded to form elongated, shallow depressions. Bedrock is at or near the surface on the ridges and may be from 2 to 20 feet below colluvium, alluvium, or loess in the depressions. Dam No. 13, as reconstructed, is 8,237 feet long and incorporated the 2,400 foot embankment of the original Dam No. 13 in the upstream toe of the new embankments. The foundation of Dam No. 13 is placed on clay or gravel that overlies bedrock. The depth to bedrock ranged from 3 to 11 feet east of the canal outlet and 11 to 20 feet on the west side of the outlet. Under the western section of the embankment, a layer of gravel occurs at a depth of 10 to 12 feet. There is no cutoff trench below the embankment, and no grouting was performed in the foundation of the dam. A 300 foot wide grass-lined spillway with a crest elevation of 6046.5 feet is located on the left abutment. The spillway was placed on 3 to 8 feet of low plasticity clay that overlies sandstone and shale. The grass lining and the riprap along the edges of the spillway are in satisfactory condition.
