This event honors National Disability Employment Awareness Month putting a spotlight on the issues job-seekers with disabilities face, and how they can be overcome.
The effort to educate the American public about issues related to disability and employment actually began in 1945, when congress enacted a law declaring the first week in October each year 'National Employ the Physically Handicapped week.' In 1962, the word 'physically' was removed to acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals with all types of disabilities. In 1988, Congress expanded the week to a month and changed the name to 'National Disability Employment Awareness Month.'
The Octobber 18 event is open to both federal employees and the public. Alejandro Anastasio is an illustrator out of Reclamation's Pacific Northwest Region and will present "My One Handed Life." Nate Slattengren, is an Outreach Specialist from the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation that will discuss Schedule A Hiring Authority. Schedule A is an Excepted Service appointing authority which may be used to hire individuals with disabilities. The Human Resources Office will also be conducting a Resume Writing Workshop that we encourage the public to attend.*
